Saddle Shoe

4"x6" oil on panel ••• Don't ask me why I paint so many shoes—I don't have a good answer for you. The only explanation I can offer is my very aggressive laziness: The dang shoes are there, so I paint them. I admit that bending down to pick them up is quite arduous, but I make the sacrifice. Carrying them all the way to the studio is another Herculean feat that I endure with grace and poise, only stopping to whine about every five steps or so. • I often forget that sarcasm does not always come through well via the written word. So, if I offended anybody, I apologize, though I think the only person I just offended was myself. I apologize to myself. There, I feel so much better. Now, Hercules is going to look for more shoes to paint.

R-2 D-2 Drink with Red Straw

6"x4" oil on panel ••• Years ago, a friend of The Spousal Unit gave Her two Star Wars promotional humungo drink cup thingies. I have repeatedly threatened to donate them to some poor unsuspecting organization or person. During that time, I grew somewhat fond of R-2 D-2 here and just kept moving the cups around instead of getting rid of them. Then one magical day, I decided to paint R-2 D-2 and I would like to be able to say it was fun, but with all the odd angles and shapes, it was a bit of pain controlling the drawing as I was painting. In the end, it came out nicely, or at least that is The Spousal Unit's opinion (and I always go by Her opinion). • The other cup thingy is fashioned after Princess Amidala and it is truly hideous (i.e., it will not be a subject of a painting). R-2 D-2 now happily resides in my studio, but that creepy Amidala thing is exiled to the garage. It is so hideous that I think I will put it outside to scare the cats in our neighborhood.

Silver King

4"x6" oil on panel ••• A while back, I started receiving emails from an online publication called VoyageLA. Several artists had suggested I would make a good subject for an interview. Considering that I find myself the most boring person in any room that happens to contain people, I disagreed with the notion. But they persisted in their campaign and more people kept bringing me to their attention. In the end, I relented and the result is the interview you see below. • If you want to learn a bit more about me, take a moment to peruse it.

Plaid Chuck

4"x6" oil on panel ••• I vaguely remember showing you the 12"x18" version of this shoe. Here is its mini predecessor. This is one of The Spousal Unit's shoes and she thought this little piece came out alright ("alright" being a grade above "meh") so I proceeded to paint the larger piece. • I truly have no idea why I changed the background from red to blue, but I think they both work. Maybe I was just fishing for another "alright" from That Woman Who Rules My Life.

Scott's Speedway Jigsaw

4"x6" oil on panel ••• (As promised, here is the second piece from my email twofer.) Well, the year is coming to a close and I would like to take this opportunity to apologize for my posts to you being a bit sporadic this past year. It has been a crazy year and, as usual, when it comes down to choosing between throwing a lot of paint at a canvas or posting my emails, I will invariably choose to hurl the goo. It is why I get up in the morning and why I sometimes (always) drive the people around me crazy AND why I consider myself to be an extremely lucky person in being able to do what I love day in and day out. • Next year promises to be just as busy. Among other things—and you are the first to hear this George Billis Gallery here in the Southern California area. My first solo show is slated to open February 23. I shall contact you again when the show nears. The gallery is a well established bi-coastal gallery and I have been involved with its Los Angeles location for several years now. This move will bring on some changes and some getting used to, but I believe it will be a good fit and I am very excited about it. • Next year, I shall endeavor to do my best in getting my posts out to your email box and I hope you will continue to understand if they are not exactly consistent in their delivery

4 Grand Prix Racer

4"x6" oil on panel  ••• (As promised, here is the second piece from my email twofer.) I don't really have a story about the red racer you see below. I just think he's cool. So let's chat about the painting above. • The whole Pokemon craze passed me by, so when I came upon this really ticked off yellow barking figurine in our house, I had no idea who or what he/she/it was, nor did I know why he/she/it was in such a foul mood. (I have since learned that its name is Pikachu.) I do know The Spousal Unit's little porcelain bunny does not care. As a matter of fact, that stoic little bunny (he is only about 1-1/4" tall) does not care what any of us think and I reckon he has the right attitude. He's the Quaalude bunny, he calms you down, I like him. • They were on the shelf together and they just seemed like a good pairing for a painting. So, here they are in goo—a ticked off Pikachu thingy of undetermined gender and a cute little bunny who does not give a hoot what anybody thinks. (I am pretty sure the bunny will live longer.)

Space Pilot X-Ray Gun

4"x6" oil on panel ••• I have three things to possibly talk about. One being that I am thinking about painting the above space gun five feet wide. The other option is to talk about the Axiom of Choice and the last is... Wow, I just heard a squirrel running around on the roof of the studio. • I'm going with number two hoping, in vain, that it will make me look at least somewhat intelligent. • I have always wondered at my exhaustion at the end of a painting session. The act of painting completely wipes me out, so that by the end of a day (or night) of painting, I am flat out beat. Sure, there is a certain level of physicality in the act of painting, but it is nothing compared to say... digging a ditch. When you are done digging a ditch, you are dang tired and you sure as heck know why. When I am done painting, I am dang tired and I really wonder why. • Well, I may have found a partial answer. It is something called the axiom of choice, which has something to do with decision fatigue. The gist is that in this modern age we are confronted on a daily basis with too many decisions. All this decision making leads to decision fatigue and blah, blah, and blah. The blah, blah, blah did not mean much to me until I considered how many decisions I make whilst painting. I would hazard a guess that we are not talking hundreds, but many thousands of decisions. The amount of my decision making is amplified by the fact that my color work does not "follow the book." There is no road map there for me to follow, hence the decisions are new and all mine. • You will note that I stated above the axiom of choice may be only a partial answer. The other part of the equation may be that I am pitifully out of shape. Not only physically, but mentally as well. Remember, I claim to have only four functioning brain cells left in my echo chamber of a cranium and those dissociated brain cells... wait... Oh yeah, the squirrels are running around on the roof again! • What was I talking about? Ah, who cares when you can listen to squirrels joyfully romping around above your head?
