Old Monrovia Gas Station

8"x12" oil on canvas panel. A little while ago, I visually tortured you with two little paintings of old gas pumps. Well, this is the wonderful little station where those pumps reside. I know there are people on my mailing list who are from or currently reside in or are at least vaguely familiar with the city of Monrovia, so I will confess up front: Yes, this station is actually positioned at 45 degrees to a corner and yes I did straighten out that corner. All I can say in my defense is that I am an artist and I have the power to bend the world to my wishes (that sentence should be followed by a maniacal laugh—bawa ha ha!, or a Bazinga!—or something like that). The corner just didn't work for me, so I had the city come in, demo the sidewalk and pour a straight one—traffic flow be damned. Again... Bazinga!

Two Cups and a Cranberry Juice Cocktail

8"x10" oil on canvas The glass with the cranberry juice in it is probably supposed to be the star of this piece, but I like the cups. Just as the glass has all sorts of light and color bouncing around on and through it, the cups have light and colors bouncing around on them as well. The challenge is to slow down and see them.    This is one of those "...let's experiment by shoving all sorts of stuff together" and "Yes, I had cranberry juice for breakfast that morning" kind of paintings.    Oh Yeah, sorry about the last post going out three times. If my camera is pure evil, my email software or server(s) or whatever god controls the email universe is pure eviler. (I love abusing the English language.)

Toy Roadster Blue

8"x12" oil on canvas panel. Just trying to catch up on my photography. I have around 20 paintings to shoot and I have never hid the fact that my camera (a.k.a. The S.O.B.) and I do not get along. There are tones and hues it heightens and others it seems to ignore altogether. This of course drives me nuts and makes me want to go outside the studio, dig a hole and bury the nefarious thing.

Kodak Brownie Starflash Camera Red

10"x8" oil on canvas. This camera came in four colors: black, white, red, and blue. I procured two (yes, legally), a red and a blue. The grand idea crossed my gray cells to paint them straight-on, with that beautiful blue flash bulb reflected in the chrome. Well, that idea turned out to be bunk. When you turn the camera straight at you, instead of the flash bulb reflecting in interestingly twisted and fun ways, the whole chrome dish just turns blue with hardly any variation. Once I stopped yawning, I turned the camera to the position you see above to make the chrome more interesting. Of course, the reflections were psychotic, but psychotic is okay with me. At least it's a challenge.

Hitachi Transistor 6 Radio

4"x6" oil on raymar panel. I have lately presented these little radios to you in straight on compositions with a little forced perspective, but this Hitachi came with its leather case, which I thought was kind of cool looking, so I decide to include it. If you see me poking around and engaging a particular subject matter repeatedly, it is pretty safe to deduce that I am poking around for a reason. One reason may be that I am looking for a suitable subject for a much larger painting and another reason may be that I am just insane. The jury is still out, but let's hope for the larger painting.

GE Clock Radio White

12"x8" oil on canvas panel. The Clan Logan has three of this particular clock radio. My Brother Unit has a red one (which you have already seen in oil paint), The Mother Unit has a kinda marbled maroonish one, and I have this white one. Mine was acquired via eBay auction and it arrived damaged. The main damage is a 4, maybe 5 inch crack right on top. Needless to say, I was disappointed, but for modeling purposes, it still suits. The cause of the damage was easy to surmise: When placed side by side, you would swear that the box the radio came in was smaller than the radio itself. This person somehow defied the laws of physics and crammed this poor radio into a smaller box. The post office, of course, could sense this ripple in the physical universe and proceeded to repeatedly punt it across the nation until it landed—with a thud—on my doorstep.    After all of that, I think it deserved to be painted.

The Flatware

6"x4" oil on raymar panel. People ask me questions all the time about painting glass and chrome. I guess they are looking for the "Tricks & Tips" section of my brain. Well, the only "Tip" about painting glass and chrome, or anything else for that matter, that I have to offer is to try to keep the paint off of your clothes and that I have yet to learn the "Trick" to keeping paint off of my own clothes (you should see me encounter spaghetti—a nightmare). Hence, my low standards—a good day of painting is when I do not get the stuff on my clothes and I commit to painting the chrome and/or glass as I see them or at least want to see them. Oh, and somebody makes me cookies, that makes for a great day of painting.
