Crayola Crayon Box

24"x16" oil on canvas ••• In an unexpected turn of events, this piece sold before I came up with a title for it. It happened so quickly that I went with what is essentially a working title. A working title is the one I slap on my image files (JPEGs) before I have had time to think of an actual title. Just changing it simply to "Box of Crayola Crayons," would have been an improvement. Even better would have been, "Pilfered Color Sticks (Yes, I stole these from The Spousal Unit's stash)," or "45¢ of Quite Effective Wall Desecraters," or "Better Be Returned to The Spousal Unit—AND SOON—If I Ever Want To See Fresh Baked Brownies Ever Again!" That last one is the most accurate, bummer I did not go with it.

Student Violin

24"x16" oil on canvas ••• What can I say about this piece? Ah, how about this... Strings, like spokes on a motorcycle, really tick me off. If I painted in a more "traditional" style, they probably would not bother me so much. Not being able to let well enough alone, I am compelled to pound and carve at the little devils with color and variable tonal shifts. Every time I paint them I swear that I shall never paint them again. But, my convictions appear quite weak as I invariably return to them. So... Here's to painting strings and spokes and whatever else ticks me off!

This piece is currently hanging in my show at Brittany Davis Gallery in Ojai. If you get the chance, go check out my work!

Chinatown Alley

24"x16" oil on canvas ••• (As promised, here is the second piece from my email threefer.) The general consensus is that I should paint a larger version of the Frolic Room piece. To be honest, except for the sign, there is not much to recommend the Frolic Room as a subject. (For the uninitiated, the Frolic Room is a somewhat infamous bar located next door to the Hollywood Pantages Theatre.) As a matter of fact, the art deco styled building that surrounds it is much more beautiful and interesting than the bar itself. To tone down the building's overpowering beauty, I simplified its details in the 6x4. If I take this piece larger, it will be hard to ignore and/or simplify such beauty, but who knows, I might just take a stab at. I guess if I did do a larger piece, the worst thing that could happen is that my neighbors will be exposed to a heavy dose of cussing delightfully wafting from my studio windows and, in the end, I will just scrape the thing, using the dregs to paint a house. Yes, I use a lot of paint.
