Old Oak

4"x6" oil on raymar panel. This is not an old oak tree in a desperately-trying-to-turn green field. It is a painting of an old oak tree in a desperately-trying-to-turn green field. I had to make this Magritte-like distinction, because it is how I survived this little devil. At the beginning, I was looking at it in the wrong manner and I was getting frustrated, then I backed off and saw it for what it was – a web of abstractions. After that, I was able to proceed. You cannot look at it as a precious tree – it will drive you nuts and ranks right up there on the sanity meter with driving on the 405 Freeway or bashing your head with bricks.
