10"x8" oil on canvas. OK, kids, don't try this at home! There are a lot of things going on in this small painting, but the most important, at least to me, are the values. When you lay paint on like icing on a cake, a lot of things can happen, and if you are willing to accept, a lot of great things. But it is so easy to lose sight of your values – I mean tonal ranges, not your sin resistance ability. If your values are off, the painting falls apart and I was struggling with that at a certain point in this session. I had to take an honest, slow look at it and bring it back together, even if it meant destroying parts of the painting I did not want to touch. Sometimes the destruction is necessary.
