Arroyo Path Study #2

6"x4" oil on door skin. Yet another dusty path. The light and shadow interplay on this path intrigued me. Sometimes you have to take artistic license when painting. Things you accept in real life or even a photograph do not necessarily translate into paint. A painting has its own life and should be massaged with that in mind. For example, the dark area up at the horizon of the path was not dark in real life. My eye accepted that and knew the path continued on, but the painting did not accept it, so I darkened it to make the horizon read better. Without that adjustment, the path appeared to just end at its peak - a path to nowhere. See what happens when an artist stands out in the sun too long?
